Tidbits

September 18th, 2009

Today I took one step closer to realizing our relocation to Seattle: I registered to take the GRE. My first step towards applying for the Masters of Library and Information Sciences program at the University of Washington.

I took the GRE once before in 2002, but the deadline has long since passed so I will be enjoying that 4-hour thrill of multiple choice at the end of October. I’m not too worried about it. In fact, 2002 was the first year they replaced the logic section with the essay section and I was in h.e.a.v.e.n. I love me some essays, and you can believe I totally killed that part of the exam. I’m expecting a repeat performance again this year. So I’ll be spending some quality time over the next month memorizing Latin and Greek root words and brushing up on my Calculus.

You know how some decisions, once made, just snap into place? Like the satisfying snap of lego bricks. I love that, and it’s been a long time coming.

I’m right there with you. I’m taking a prep course through UW’s women’s center, and will do the GRE in Novemenber/Dec. I’m applying to the MSIM program also through the ischool. We could be peers. :-)

Good news! You don’t need to brush up on Calculus for the GRE. I’m studying for the test right now (planning to take it in October, I think), and the math is all algebra and geometry and basic statistics/probability.

Do not brush up on calculus for the GRE! A good test prep book is all you need - you will be surprised how simple the math is, particularly for someone who actually made it to calculus in college.

If you make it to Seattle, look me up! I’m always on the lookout for new friends in this impossible-to-make-friends-in city!

I’m also a current MSLIS student, but not at UW :)

no way no way no way!!! I love that program ;p ! I’ve attended a few of their events on campus even. I’m here in Seattle since July 7th about. Alls well, hope you join here soon (!).

Holy crap! Talk about strikin’ it rich!

Okay, people, give me the lowdown. I spent my years in Washington cooped up on the Bremerton naval base - I don’t know nearly enough about the Seattle neighborhoods. Where should an aspiring librarian and tattooist set up their homestead (with one greyhound and one cat)?

MIKE!!! You’re in Seattle!! How long you stickin’ around, dude??

Thanks for all the GRE tips, folks! I made it through Calculs 4 as an undergrad. GRE….do your worst!!

Good luck on this bad boy. I wrote it in 2000, and had those horrid logic questions. When I wrote I bought one of the prep books that had the 333 most common words found on the GRE, and I learned up those words for the verbal section. A shocking number of them appeared on the test.
